About the Department of Drama

Nationally renown instructors teach classes The Department of Drama, with a rich history dating to the early 1900s, has developed a long-standing reputation in the theatre world and enjoys a partnership with Syracuse Stage, the area's premier professional Equity theatre. Because the two organizations are housed in the same four-theatre and cabaret complex, students are automatically connected to the exciting world of professional theatre.

The Summer College Acting & Musical Theater program was created for talented students who have been inspired by the energy and sophistication of theatre and musical theatre. The program develops the abilities of both beginning and highly experienced performers who are serious about the field and eager to work hard. Our goal is to help you grow creatively through full-time, college-level theatre training under the direction of acclaimed professional performers and teachers. The six-week program develops your performance skills and provides a behind-the-scenes view of theatre that combines music, drama and dance. You register for two three-credit courses, Drama (DRA) 100 Elements of Performance, and DRA 200 Basic Acting.

Classes held from 9 a.m. to noon focus on musical theatre, including acting, voice, improvisation, movement, dance, stage combat, makeup, and scene study. Afternoon studios, held from 1 to 4:30 p.m., involve additional work in acting, movement, and voice, along with rehearsals for two public performances and the option of audition training for college admissions and future productions.

All classes aim to improve your command of your body, mind, and voice, so that combined they become the expressive instrument of an actor.
