Admission Criteria

Students applying to Syracuse University Summer College are expected to be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Students must be at least 15 years of age by the orientation and move-in day of their selected program (the Architecture program requires that students are 16 years of age). Graduating seniors are also able to apply if they are not attending Syracuse University in the fall as a matriculated student. Rising sophomores are only eligible for noncredit courses.

The Summer College application requires students to complete the online application through SlideRoom, and includes the following:

  • Biographical, demographic, and school information
  • Two essay responses. There are six essay prompts, and students choose two:
    1. Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.
    2. Describe something that makes you unique. This can be an interest, skill, or hobby, a recognition, a notable volunteer or co-curricular involvement, or other life experience.
    3. Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
    4. Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
    5. Explain your interest in the Summer College program(s) you have selected, and what you hope to gain from your experience on campus this summer.
    6. Upload an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, one of your own design, or a recent graded essay/paper that preferably includes teacher comments.
  • A high school transcript with a copy of the most recent report card (these may be unofficial or official, and must include at least one full year of grades)
  • Optional, though strongly encouraged: a (non-family) recommendation from a teacher, school counselor, coach  that addresses the applicant’s maturity, self-discipline, and potential for success in a college-level program of study
