About the School of Architecture

Syracuse's School of Architecture is the fourth oldest in the country and has been preparing students for architectural careers since 1873. In 2004, the SU School of Architecture was ranked fourth nationally and number one on the East Coast among architecture and design schools for its undergraduate program, according to a survey by the Design Futures Council.

The five-year undergraduate program leads to the bachelor of architecture, the first professional degree. The required design thesis in the fifth year serves as a valuable springboard to the profession. Syracuse graduates hold positions with firms around the world, specializing in areas such as residential, commercial, industrial, civic, and architectural preservation.

The Summer College Architecture program builds your understanding and appreciation of architecture through studio design problems, lectures, and drawing exercises. Living the life of a university architecture student for six weeks can help you decide whether to pursue study in a professional architectural school or in a related field. And if you discover architecture is for you, you'll have a head start. The program is structured so you can produce the beginnings of an architecture program application portfolio.

You register for one six-credit course, Architecture (ARC) 193 Basic Concepts of Architecture, taught by Syracuse University School of Architecture faculty. Spend your mornings working on drawing exercises and attending lectures in architectural history and theory, urban design, building technology, and construction.

Afternoons and evenings are spent in the studios in the School of Architecture in Slocum Hall on Syracuse's Main Campus, working on exercises and design problems that explore architectural concepts and principles. Students frequently present their work for discussion and review, including a final design review with a School of Architecture faculty panel, and a closing exhibition for students, faculty, friends, and families. Round out this intense and exciting taste of architectural study with field trips to see buildings designed by such prominent architects as Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Kahn, and I.M. Pei and guest lectures by faculty and graduates.

With a wide variety of learning opportunities, students in the architecture Summer College program participate in lectures, field trips, and most importantly, hands-on studio classrooms.

here's the deal

  • learn what it means to see and think architecturally
  • develop design, drawing, and model-building skills
  • tackle challenging design problems
  • work on a portfolio for college admission or internship
  • experience the camaraderie of working in the architecture studio
