COLLEGE cOUNSELING rESOURCES
We see Summer College as an opportunity for students to not only learn more about their academic passions, but as an avenue to really develop their college resume. Our program believes in promoting and reinforcing a college exploration culture that encourages students to prepare for higher education.
Through the School of Education at Syracuse University, we’ve formed a partnership that will significantly aid our students in their college search and the application process. A student consultant from the nationally-recognized School and College Counseling program in the School of Education will hold information sessions throughout the summer touching upon areas like: the admissions interview, the college essay, and finding the "right fit". They will also be available for one on one consultation so students can personally discuss their questions about the college search and get connected with resources on campus like the Office of Admissions.
2012 Summer College Consultant
For Summer College 2012 our consultant will be Julie Walas. She comes to us with five years of University admissions experience and her time with us this summer helps her wrap up her work on her Master's Degree in School and College Counseling. Julie has led various workshops on the college admissions process, and with her familiarity looks to bring both insight and counseling sessions to our Summer College populations this year.
In her full-time job, as Director of Undergraduate Recruitment and Student Engagement for the iSchool at Syracuse University, she works to recruit and advise more and more talented and diverse classes of undergraduates to the iSchool and to engage the students in opportunities to enhance their education when they arrive. Julie is the advisor of three on campus student organizations focused on underrepresented integration, leadership and engagement, and on the side, she's also the Assistant Coach to the SU Spirit Program's, Otto the Orange.
Community Building
The mission of Scholarship in Action, which was enacted by Chancellor Nancy Cantor, has transformed Syracuse University. We firmly believe in making sure our students aren't just learning in the classroom, but are active and engaged in the community. The Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public and Community Service at SU will be working with staff in the Office of Residence Life to provide community service opportunities during the summer for students looking to complete service hours or looking for ways to give back to the community.
With students coming from all over the world to participate in our programs, Summer College is a unique opportunity to learn more about different people and places. The Office of Residence Life staff develops and organizes extensive social programming in and out of the residence hall so students can develop a fun and exciting community. From dodgeball tournaments to organized trips to Niagara Falls, students will find they have a number of options to be engaged in their new community.
