Transportation to and From Syracuse

When making travel arrangements, make sure to pay close attention to your Orientation Schedule (available Spring 2019) and your program’s final commitment. Unless noted otherwise, programs conclude at 4:00pm on the last Friday of class. Please read all of the information below before making travel arrangements. 

Syracuse is located in the heart of central New York State. It has a metropolitan population of approximately 663,000 and is the economic and education hub of the region. Central New York residents are helpful and accustomed to interacting with the large number of international and visiting students who make their home at Syracuse University.

Arriving in Syracuse

Before you arrive, please visit the Orientation and Move-In page for a full list of recommended items to bring to Summer College, your Orientation Schedule, and Move-In information.

Flying In: SYR Airport

The closest airport to Syracuse University is the Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR). If making flight reservations, it is recommended that you use this airport. Note, this is the only airport with Summer College complementary shuttle service. Information on the complementary shuttle service is below.

Facts about Syracuse Hancock International Airport:

  • 15-20 minutes from campus
  • Small, recently renovated airport with two terminals

Arrival by Bus or Train

If you are taking a bus or train to Syracuse, the closest station is the William F. Walsh Regional Transportation Center (RTC). Note, this is the only bus and train center with Summer College complementary shuttle service. Information on the complementary shuttle service is below.

Facts about the Regional Transportation Center:

  • Approximately 15 minutes from campus
  • RTC is a small regional transportation center providing both train and bus service
  • There is one main entrance with two sets of doors

Driving to Campus

Are you being driven directly to campus? Summer College Staff and Resident Advisors will be at the residence hall to greet you. Students will be emailed a map of campus, directions to the residence hall, any road closures, and a Move-In Pass (residential students only) approximately 2-3 weeks prior to the move-in date. Please review the Orientation Schedule (available Spring 2019) for your particular program’s move-in date for information on when to arrive to campus.

Follow these steps:

  • Don’t forget to print out and bring your Move-In Pass that corresponds to your move-in day:
    • Move-In Pass 1: Saturday, June 29, 2019 Coming soon!

  • Place the MANDATORY Move-In Pass on the dashboard of your vehicle on your move-in day.

Complementary Shuttle Information

Shuttle Arrivals

Summer College provides complimentary shuttle service from the Syracuse airport (SYR) and the Regional Transportation Center (RTC) to the residence halls. The shuttle service is for STUDENTS ONLY. The shuttle will run approximately every 30 minutes according to the schedule below:

  • Arrival: Saturday, June 29, 2019 | 9:00 AM EST – 4:00 PM EST
  • Arrival: Saturday, July 13, 2019 | 9:00 AM EST – 4:00 PM EST
  • Arrival: Saturday, July 27, 2019 | 9:00 AM EST – 4:00 PM EST

If utilizing Summer College’s complementary shuttle service, please make your reservations within these times. If a scheduled arrival time is outside of this window, students will need to find their own transportation to campus. Please indicate in the Arrival Form (available Spring 2019)  that you will need a shuttle. You will be emailed your shuttle pick-up time approximately five days before your move-in date.

Shuttle Departures

Summer College provides complimentary shuttle transfers from the residence halls to the Syracuse airport (SYR) and the Regional Transportation Center (RTC). You will be assigned a shuttle time that will be approximately two hours before your flight

The shuttle will run approximately every 30 minutes according to the schedule below:

  • Departure: Friday, July 12, 2019 | 3:00 PM EST – 8:00 PM EST
  • Departure: Saturday, July 13, 2019 | 4:00 AM EST – 12:00 PM EST
  • Departure: Friday, July 19, 2019 | 3:00 PM EST – 8:00 PM EST
  • Departure: Saturday, July 20, 2019 | 4:00 AM EST – 12:00 PM EST
  • Departure: Friday, July 26, 2019 | 3:00 PM EST – 8:00 PM EST
  • Departure: Saturday, July 27, 2019 | 4:00 AM EST – 12:00 PM EST
  • Departure: Friday, August 9, 2019 | 3:00 PM EST – 8:00 PM EST
  • Departure: Saturday, August 10, 2019 | 4:00 AM EST – 12:00 PM EST

Please make accommodations to depart between the above hours if utilizing our complementary shuttle service. If the scheduled departure time is outside of this window, students will need to find their own transportation to campus.  Please indicate in Departure Form that you will need a shuttle and you will be emailed your shuttle time approximately three days before your departure date.

Hotels and Lodging

Some families may want to spend a weekend on campus while moving their students in, or visit with students through the duration of the program.

The Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel and Conference Center is the only hotel affiliated with Syracuse University. For reservations, visit their site or call 800.395.2105.

A number of hotels are within walking distance of campus, with many others only a short drive to the University. For a complete list, visit the Syracuse Convention and Visitors Bureau. To view hotels close to campus, select “Syracuse University” or “Downtown” as the location in the Regions menu.
