Summer College Law program provides an opportunity for you to develop a realistic understanding of law school and the legal profession.
Along the way, each student will write his or her own case theme and theory, will analyze and make judgments about how to use the evidence, and strategize how to attack the opposition.
The course is exciting and intense. It polishes writing skills, public speaking skills, and certainly requires that the student think on his or her feet! It's a wonderful experience-fun and education wrapped together in impressive courtroom at the College of Law.
What's the deal...
- Trial practice offers the student an opportunity for hands-on, real-life development of litigation as a practicing attorney.
- Using a problem created by the professor, each student is assigned to serve either as a prosecutor or as defense counsel.
- Other students in the class will serve as witnesses and the parties involved in the case. Occasionally, students will serve as witnesses and parties involved in the case.
- Occasionally, students will serve as judges or bailiffs as well.
- Students will write and deliver a performance of an opening statement in the case, the direct examination of their own witness, cross examination of the opposing counsel's witness, and a closing argument.
- For the final skill, the closing argument, a panel of guest judges, all attorneys, will judge the students, two of whom will be chosen "Best Oralist" for the course. The criteria will include synthesis of evidence, response to opposition's evidence, poise and demeanor, and language and persuasion.

At the program's end celebration the two "Outstanding Oralists" will deliver their closing arguments to the entire summer session participants, parents and guests when they receive the award.
