About the College of Arts
and Sciences
The College of Arts and Sciences, founded in 1870, is the largest of the undergraduate schools and colleges at Syracuse University. The college houses the traditional liberal arts disciplines grouped as humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and physical and natural sciences. A liberal arts education is the time-honored path toward developing intellectual capabilities to the fullest extent, and to achieving the broadest possible perspective on the world and human experience.
The Summer College Liberal Arts program is for you if you want to take on the challenge of full-time college work in an independent environment. You choose this option because you have a specific educational goal-polishing your writing skills, for example-that directs you to enroll in particular courses. Or you may be curious about a new area of study. Whatever your situation, liberal arts offers the challenge of college work and gets you started on your college education.
As a liberal arts student you select one college course and share the classroom with regular University students as well as other Summer College students. All courses are taught by University faculty or instructors. A list of liberal arts courses with time schedules will be mailed to you in the spring.
