the Technical Theatre program is designed to introduce you to professional theatre technical skills under the leadership of the production staff of Syracuse Stage

About the Syracuse University Drama Department and Syracuse Stage

The Drama Department at Syracuse University is designed specifically for those interested in careers in professional theatre. The relationship with Syracuse Stage, which shares the same building, allows the drama students to observe and interact with working professionals. Over the years, Syracuse Stage, one of the outstanding Equity companies in the country, has had several productions move to New York City stages and to regional theatres in other parts of the country. Four years in this environment prepares students for the rigors and rewards of life in professional theatre. Faculty members are practicing professionals with the academic credentials to guide you and the professional experience to recognize what the theatre demands.

In the Summer College Technical Theatre Program you will work side by side with working professionals both in the classroom and in the theatre, with friends who share the same interests and talents. Your morning will be filled with classroom work exploring the principles and techniques used in scenery, prop, and costume construction, scenic painting, stage electrics and sound, and stage management. Your afternoons will be focused on practical application of these skills in the professional shops, field trips, and professional guest seminars. This combination of classroom experience and practical application will give you the experience of a full-time technical theatre student. The summer session culminates with the technical students building and operating the technical elements for the final production produced by the entire Summer College Theatre Program.

SCENERY CONSTRUCTION: You will gain training and experience in standard methods of theatre construction using techniques and skills such as carpentry, welding and rigging.

PROP CONSTRUCTION: You will experience prop craft creation, carpentry, and softgoods construction.

SCENIC PAINTING: You will gain training and experience in scenic painting, carving, and texturing techniques as applied to scenery, drops, and properties.

LIGHTING. You will explore the fundamentals of lighting design and basic principles of electricity. You will participate in hangs and focuses and learn to operate computerized light boards and other equipment.

COSTUMING: You will discover the techniques of costume design and construction, including pattern making and draping, fabric modification, theatrical makeup, and stitching.

STAGE MANAGEMENT: You will learn the techniques used by the central organizing figure in a production. You will develop techniques in blocking, prompting, scheduling, taking and giving daily production notes and other communications, running a technical rehearsal and calling cues.

You will produce projects in each area that reinforces the application of skills and techniques explored in the classroom, culminating in a final project that includes the construction, installation and operation of all technical elements for the final Summer College Acting & Musical Theatre Program production.
